Calibre Companion FAQ

How to download file via "SmartDevice App Interface" Calibre driver

$

Hi,

What would be the code for downloading any file (not only books within the library location path in the "Calibre Companion" app) from a Calibre plugin?

I have the device object available via "self.opts.gui.device_manager.device" and "self.opts.gui.device_manager.device.name" returns "SmartDevice App Interface".

The use case is downloading a bookmarks file, located outside of the main path (where all books are uploaded), set up in the "Calibre Companion" app.

Than you.

sync to phone problem

I'm running Calibre 5.43 x64 on a W10 PC and use Calibre Companion on my Samsung A71 5G to read books.

I have a 20 GB Calibre library on my PC. I managed to very slowly wirelessly transfer 14 GB to a 512 GB SD card on my A71 but can no longer connect with wifi or a USB cable even when I select wireless device/don't sync books. The initial connection starts ok but then times out, possibly in generating the book list to send to the phone. Error message at end.

I've searched for a solution but could not find one.

My ebook structure on my phone is sdcard/Books/title-author(id) so I guess I need to change that to something like sdcard/Books/A/Asimov/title.

I'm debating abandoning Calibre Companion and just exporting the library directly then copying it to the sdcard. I read books with fbreader but it wouldn't be easy to navigate 20 GB of books plus then I'd have to Manually copy any new books to the phone.

I've read suggestions to try Calibre Sync but I'm not sure if that's the way to go.

Please point me in the right direction. Periodically I add books to Calibre on my PC and need a way to automatically sync to the phone.

Thank you

Calibre Companion + Cloud Connection - 'database damaged'

$

hi,
Windows 11
large (approx 30k books, approx 110 Gb) library in Calibre.
Calibre Companion 5.4.4.20 (412)(last one).
Calibre's library itself in Dropbox. Automatic online-only mode/smart sync is not enabled
Several devices with CC.
First connect to cloud library is ok.
If calibre is not shutdown at this thime - next one from some device or other devices(!) is not - says database is damaged and show library selection dialog except there is nothing to select. Only 'reset cloud connection' on all devices and reconnect helps.
If Calibre is shutdown at this time - everything works. usually. until next day.

How to fix this?
local library on microsd doesn't look like option (CC can't connect at all - can't open it due to size, it can open smaller versions).
Dropping CC is not preferred option(I arleady use Bookfusion as secondary solution but it's still doesn't have everything necessary).

The new owners have walked away from CC. You won't get support here, or anywhere else as far as I can tell.

Simple way to send metadata only

Ok, what I want to do is view my books on Calibre Companion with my phone, scroll through them and choose one to read.

Everything works as expected all is great, but then I arrive.

I want to read my books on a E-ink device, not the phone.

Can't really browse covers and details very well on b&w e-ink,
so I use Calibre Companion on phone above to choose a book and then read it on my e-ink device.

What I want to do is not have the actual books on the phone - just the metadata. (space issues)

Anyone here think of an easy way to do this?
is it as simple as searching for the epubs and deleting them?
Maybe I can send empty records?

Calibre Companion not sorting properly

I have an older version of CC - pre subscription but it was doing the job I wanted it for - get calibre library to iPhone - and keep my library organized so I could easily see if I had a book or not - it was sorted by author. Then a while back I found it would not sort by author.

I thought I read in one of these forums that it may be a consequence of using multiple ways to transfer my books; usb cable, wireless and / or content server. Guilty, I have used all 3.

Anyway, I also thought I read that one solution was to delete the CC library and transfer them from calibre all again.

It's finally annoying me enough I thought I would do that.

I'm ok with having to copy over small batches of books at a time to rebuild the library.

But I'm wondering if there is a quick way to delete the 700 books without having to do it one at a time.

Thanks for any suggestions

Best old version of CC for Pixel 7 Android 13?

So there are some amazing trade-in deals on the Pixel 7, so I've finally upgraded my Pixel XL Android 10 to a Pixel 7 running Android 13.
I was wondering if there is a consensus on what older version of CC is best with newer Android?

I remember having issues with the Play Store copy, so used a saved copy 5.4.4.1 (392) from my Pixel XL.
It does seem to work fine except for it not using about 1/5th of the screen leaving an empty area blank area at the bottom.

Does any other version of CC work better with Android 13?
I know the gap is not because of the tall aspect ratio since I don't see a bottom gap on a MotoG Play running Android 11 once I turned on the "Full Screen" option. I believe it's CC trying to compensate for the camera notch gap.

Unfortunately I don't see a "Full Screen" option on Pixel 7 Android 13.

As for performance, the downloading of a large library got slower and slower even with the recommended filename mask.
It didn't help that the Pixel 7 kept closing CC after I wasn't there to click on "Wait" when CC was busy, so I had to keep restarting the download all.
Once my entire library was downloaded it's very responsive, quite nice.

I'm still thankful that CC is 64bit, I had to give up several favorite apps that are 32bit only since Pixel 7 doesn't support 32bit.

Problem with Android 11 and Calibre Companion

With 2 different Android 11 devices and Calibre Companion (wireless device), the following error occurs (sometimes) for more than approximately 16,000 books

Not with other devices and not when there are fewer books.
And it happens on different networks.

Android CC-only data - transfer method?

Not a problem, per se, but I'm wondering if there's any way to retain the CC-only data (the data that doesn't sync back to Calibre, like read date and read status) when switching to a new Android device. Is there a file with this data that could be manually transferred to the new device once CC and the library have been loaded there? It would be nice not to either lose that info, or spend hours manually entering it book by book from the old device to the new.

Downloaded books not showing in CC

Lately books downloaded from Calibre (as wireless transfer) are not showing in Companion but do show in Downloads/Documents and open correctly in FB Reader. This is new. It is a pain not having all books in CC. This is on a Pixel 7 Pro and Windows 10 laptop.
Thanks

Can't open reader

I've been using Calibre on my own Linux server and Calibre Companion on my Android devices for many years.

Today, CC can no longer open readers.

I have a Motorola phone and a Samsung tablet, both with CC and Moon+ Reader Pro installed. They've both been working fine.

Today, neither CC can open the reader. I get a dialog:
Do you have a reader app?

Help! CC not able to Integrate to ANYTHING on new Tablet!

Hello, all.

I'm at my absolute WIT'S END and I desperately need help! I've been using CC and eReader Prestigio across multiple devices for years and never had any trouble (all Samsungs - currently Galaxy S22 and Tab 6 Lite). CC keeps my books in a beautifully organized manner, and Prestigio is the reader app it has always opened to.

I just bought a new Samsung Galaxy Tab9 and now I can't use CC AT ALL! When I try to open a book from CC using Prestigio, I get the error message: Open failed EACESS (Permission Denied). I can open the books directly in Prestigio, but CC will not point to them.

This is irritating, but I thought to adapt by trying a different reader so I downloaded Moon+. CC won't even RECOGNIZE that Moon+ is on my tablet. After deleting Prestigio and installing Moon, CC just asks if I have a reader app installed. It won't even give me the option of using the 'Send book to app' function.

I ALSO created a Net Library using my Calibre for Windows and allowed Moon+ access. While I can see all my books in Moon, it's just in an ugly file format, which completely negates the purpose of CC (easy access in a simple to see format).

I updated both my Calibre for Windows and CC to the newest versions and made sure my tablet was using the latest version as well.

All my books are currently in .epub format, though I occasionally will need to open a .pdf for work (not something I'm worried about right now).

Can someone please help? I just want to browse and read my books! Thank you so much! :help:

My user defined sort is ignored (but selected) on CC start

Hi,

So thanks to that new version screw up I had to reinstall calibre on my tab from the one on my phone that was two versions behind (finishes with 19). But what I'm about to describe doesn't happen on my phone, only on my tab.
I set my usual sort: (Author/Series) but when I start CC the books are in another sort entirely, even if I have deactivated all but my own sort in the settings. (its looks like the title sort though).
I have to click on the sort icon and click on my user defined sort for it to sort it right.
I reinstalled calibre and restore the full backup but my sorts had been lost, idk if it's linked.

Once I've clicked on the sort everything is fine but it sucks to have to do it everytime I launch CC, very aggravating.

Anyone knows what I can do?

Thanks guys.

PS: It's definitely the "Title" sort that seems to be there by default even when my user defined is checked and selected. Even when I deactivate grouping, uncheck Formats, whatever, it will be the sort I'll have when starting CC.

PS2 : I'v even backuped my phone settings and database and restored it on the tab but it didn't fix the problem (neither did restarting the tab btw).
