[iOS] Just purchased CC, two questions

$

I just purchased CC and successfully configured it on my iPad to sync wirelessly all my books from my calibre desktop program.

I have two questions:

1. If I understand how CC works correctly, in order to actually read a book, I need to open it from iBooks or another external book reader app. When I hit on "read" on a book within CC, I get asked to which app the book should be copied to. Does this mean that I have to reserve twice the space of my library on my iPad? (once for the books in CC and a second time for iBooks?) If this is the case, it's a tremendous waste of space, which I frankly cannot afford...

2. If the files don't actually get copied but are somehow linked to iBooks without reserving space, how do I perform a mass import? I would have to do the "copy to iBooks" procedure more than 1000 times (once for each book in my library).

Thank you for your time.

CC vs. Moon+ Reader's Net Library

Hi,

I'm a bit stumped about whether to use CC to select a book to be read with Moon+ Reader, or to use Moon+ Reader's built-in Net Library. In either case, I connect to my Calibre content server (with CC or Net Library), select a book based on metadata (Rating, Author, etc), download it, and read it in the Moon+ Reader.

The number of steps is the same, and the book selection process via metadata categories is the same.

So I'm trying to figure out what the value-added to using CC is in my case. I can see it if your preferred book reader does not have a Net Library feature, but not sure what the CC advantage is in my case.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Dennis

Is it possible to upload books to Calibre using CC?

Import Empty books as records only

Hello,

I'm new so apologies if this is a dumb question.

I have two Calibre libraries, the first is a conventional collection of e-books that I own, no problem importing them.

The second is a "library" of empty books which I use as a catalogue of books that I hold other than in Calibre, usual physical items. I had hoped to use Calibre Companion as a portable catalogue, but can find no way to import the records of empty books. Have I missed something or hoped for too much.

:help:
Many thanks,

Transfering books

My daughter will give me a list of books she wants. I will buy them and load them into Calibre. Then she will bring her tablet over and we will transfer her books to her via wireless device connection.

She is moving across the country, but wants me to continue to purchase and organize the books for her. I don't have the knowledge to set up my computer as a server so that she can connect that way.

If I got a cloud account, Can I use Calibre's Connect to folder to upload just the books I just purchased for her. If I did this, could she point her CC to this folder to get her books.

Or could I just copy the Calibre folder and paste in into dropbox like I was backing up to a external drive. Would she be able to point CC to this folder and download her book with CC this way?

If not, what would be an option for her to be able to get her books with CC?

Thank you for your patience with me and my questions. :)

OK i think im broken.

I've always found Calibre amazing. Calibre Companion when it works is also great.
However with a book collection of 14k+ the syncing of the two is slow and fraught with too many device disconnections to mention.
I made the foolhardy decision to upgrade the SDCard in my Samsung Galaxy S10.5 (KitKit 4.4) from 64Gb to 128Gb.
I changed the path for the books to the correct Calibre folder on the SDCard. I configured the template for the best performance.
In CC i connected via WIFI, and sent fairly small groups of books to the device in Calibre.
It trundled along at an excruciating pace with Device disconnections every 5 or 10 minutes.
After 5 days i was relieved to have sent the final book.
However when searching for Books With Missing Files in CC it returned 6988 covers with no files.
I decided a different approach. I deleted the dead books from CC, and connected to Calibre with the content server option.
3 days later i had sent the final book with this method.
Search for Books with Missing files, and yup there's thousands of them again.
AS a final test i connected via WIFI and sent 200 of the missing books back.
They opened fine, until i rebooted the tablet and they have joined the missing list again.
I really tired of how difficult and long-winded this is.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Calibre & CC No Longer Communicate

Hey all --

I've been stumped and need answers from the pros. I wanted to sync a few new books to my CC and discovered I cannot connect as a wireless device anymore. It doesn't even work if I try to connect using a fixed port. So I thought perhaps I could transfer the new books via USB, which they did transfer, but they don't go in the CC companion database. Then I discovered that I have several books in my CC companion database with missing files - and they're books that I've recently read. I have no idea what happened there. I have over 650 books in Calibre. I'm to the point that want to delete Calibre Companion and start from scratch but not sure how I could since I can't connect. Checked all the Wi-Fi and Firewall settings, etc. and they are as they should be - that hasn't changed. Is it possible a newer update from Calibre made it go wonky on me? I wish I worked in an IT department because I'm at a loss right now - and frustrated. Any advice would be appreciated. I also noticed that the last set of books I downloaded are locked and DRM'd which they shouldn't have been since I have Apprentice Alf's plug in, which makes me wonder if it's an update problem (the last update being the problem). I have a Samsung Android TS2.

[Android] Question for users: "simple search" changes

$

This is a request for comment. :)

CC Android supports 2 kinds of searching:
  • full search: one that uses close to the full expression capability of calibre (e.g., authors:foo and series:bar)
  • simple search: one that uses search terms without a lookup name prefix, where the search is limited to the fields title sort, series, authors, and tags.
The simple search is much (!) faster than the full search because it can use the database instead of looping through the books one by one to evaluate the expression.

I am considering changing CC to allow the user to add other fields to the simple search field list? This would make CC more like calibre, where in calibre Search preferences a user can enter a list of column lookup names that are searched when using non-prefixed names.

The benefit: the user can extend which columns are searched, making it possible to use simple search on custom columns.

The negative: yet another mysterious option somewhere. Changing the text in the search box might help. For example, the current text "Simple search: words only; look in title, authors, series, and tags" could become "Faster search: words only; look in fields selected in Settings / Grouping Drawer / Fields for simple search."

The question: would anyone actually use this feature if it appeared?

CC 5.3.2.1 has been released to the beta channel.

Changes:
  • Change "Simple search" to "Faster search"
  • Add an option to choose which fields (columns) are examined when using Faster Search. Settings / Grouping Drawer / Fields examined in faster search.
  • Updated languages: Polish, Vietnamese
  • [BUG FIX] Fix the Content Server connection disconnecting if a search finds no books.

Change calibre library to:

While using the new Calibre 3.0, I'm receiving this message in CC when trying to view metadata in an accessed library........

"Error retrieving book details, is caliber updated to 0.9.0 or higher"

and CC hangs when attempting to download book from this new library (download marker continues to spin till I abort CC)

All my libraries now show up in CC but I can not access them...Have I done something wrong?????

Thanks for a great app!!!!

Calibre V3 and CC 5.3.1.1 on Android 4.2

Since I use Calibre V3 i can't change the libraries for upload.
As you see in the attached picture, CC identifies the libraries but it sticks to the main "Bibliothek".

To find a solution i reinstalled the CC app and I moved from Calibre Portable to an installed version. Nothing changes.

In the portable Calibre are more libraries and I can use some, but not all.

What is the reason?

Regards Herbert

PS: CC on Android 7.1.1 is also not working

[IOS] Refresh of available libraries on OneDrive

Hello,
I use both versions of Calibre Companion (Ios and Android). I'm storing my calibre libraries on OneDrive. I have added a few libraries to OneDrive three days ago. I can see and access them with the android version. But I'm unable to get a refreshed list on the Ios app. I only get the libraries known before my update. I have tried every option available to force a reload of the list short of uninstalling the app.
Am i doing something wrong ? Or is it a bug ?
Thanks.

[Android] CC filetypes accepted by device

Hello!

First thanks for this software. :thanks: It's ideal to get my calibe managed books synced to my tablet. I'm going to get the pro-version today.

I've a question - or possibly a feature request:

Although calibre can't display MHTML-Files, it's possible to import such files. I use them to archive webpages (with FF and palemoon using unmht on Linux).
It's very handy to import them to calibre adding metadata so I can search within my calibre-book-library and display them by klicking within the palemoon browser on my notebook.

But - I can't transfer them using CC (and possibly launch the MHTviewer for those files) to have the same feature on my Android-Tablet :help:
So it would be nice to have the filetype MHTML added to the setup list of bookformats to sync these files as well.
Can that be configured or is this "hard coded"

Cheers
Knut

[iOS] Bug - Language Metadata

$

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I couldn't find any other posts, so will start a new post.

I noticed that when I tried to sync my metadata between Calibre & CC, the Calibre default Language field did not work with CC. I ended up disabling the Calibre Language field and making a custom column which worked with CC. All the other default/generic Calibre metadata fields worked with CC fine but not the Language field for some reason.

Apologies if this may actually be a Calibre issue instead of a CC problem or if this has already been raised, but I don't think so...

Kindle HD8

I have a Kindle HD8, which I've added Google Play to. So now I use CC and Moon+, as I used to on my Nexus 7.
I connect to Calibre on my computer wirelessly. Everything works smoothly except that Calibre is not picking up the books I have marked as Read. I've tried emptying the Library, and restocking it, and I've updated Calibre to the most recent version.
Is there anything else I can do?

[Android] New CC user - Local Network Access

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked / answered before.

I have my Calibre Library stored on a NAS device on my local network.
I don't generally have Calibre running on a PC, so ideally I would like to be able to use CC to access the Library directly on the NAS.
It looks like the Cloud offering should be the one to use, but it has no SMB or other local network options.

Have I missed an option, or am I out of luck?

Ian

Edit Metadata on iPad, then sync edits to Calibre "master"?

$

Hello. I've just purchased this app in the hopes of being able to use my iPad to clean up or update my metadata, then send it up to Calibre on my home server, closing a large gap in my workflow, which is basically...
  • Use iPad to download book or report (mostly PDF)
  • Send it to GoodReader app to read, maybe annotate, and/or upload - from GoodReader - to a folder ("Calibre Inbox") on that server
  • Use (awkward) Remote Desktop client app to have Calibre import docs/ebooks from that folder into library
  • Continue using that awkward iPad app to edit metadata
  • Use iPad Safari browser or Marvin app (and always-on Calibre server) to browse/filter/search, then download and "open-in" GoodReader app

I'm still exploring your app and so far I already seem to be able to do what I've discovered so far using my workflow above (connect, find book, etc). So my 2 questions are:

1. Can I edit and clean up my (initially synced from Calibre to your app) metadata (tags, publication date, author, etc) from the iPad and have it synced back to my "master" Calibre library on the server? and

2. Is there documentation (other than the FAQ) where I can get a clear sense of what this app does, see a list of features and learn how to use them?

Thank you

Bill

PS: I have been hoping for a Calibre 'companion' app for awhile as I live on my iPad, so thanks for doing this

[Android Only?] CC FAQ - How do I choose what to see in the book details display?

$

Hi @chaley

I think the CC FAQ - How do I choose what to see in the book details display? needs to be updated to [Android] only as I don't seem to be able to do this on the iOS version? If this is true, I would really like to request this feature and I think I did in the iOS Wish List. This would be a very useful feature. It would also be good if you could bulk/default edit this information. Currently it seems you can only edit the book detail information per book....For example I don't need the path field and would like to move the comments section to the top.

:thanks:

Of my 200 odd files, one causes CC to crash when doing a Wireless Device transfer. CC, Calibre, iOS all at latest versions. The file is 588.6 MB, is that too big?
